Weslaco Subdivision Breaks Ground on Homes for Low to Moderate-income Families

Updated: Nov 11, 2022

On Thursday, October 20, 2022, Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. (AHSTI), the City of Weslaco, and Knapp Community Care Foundation held a groundbreaking for its newest Weslaco subdivision, Mid-Valley Estates.

The proposed subdivision, being developed by AHSTI, is projected to result in approximately 114 new single-family homes for low to moderate-income families with 44 four-plex units also being made available.

According to data provided by potential homeowners during AHSTI’s profile creation step, Weslaco is one of the highest demanded cities where people want to live. Mid-Valley Estates will mark the first time AHSTI develops a subdivision in the city of Weslaco.

“We have been trying to find just the right location in Weslaco for several years now,” says Robert Calvillo, AHSTI Executive Director. “Thanks to our partners in Weslaco, we found the perfect one with all the pieces of the funding coming together at the same time.”

The final piece of that funding puzzle came from a $1 million investment from the Knapp Community Care Foundation. “KCCF understands the relationship between safe affordable housing for our families in the Mid-Valley and their physical, mental and spiritual health,” says Yvonne “Bonnie” Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer of Knapp Community Care Foundation.

“Research indicates that the neighborhoods people live in, learn, work and play have a major impact on their health and well-being”. Other funders for Mid-Valley Estates include Hidalgo County Urban County Program and Opportunity Finance Network.

Development of Mid-Valley Estates will begin immediately, and homes are projected to be available summer 2023.

Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. is a local non-profit organization that provides homeownership opportunities and education for low to moderate-income working families. Nationally recognized, AHSTI provides a wide range of non-profit housing solutions. AHSTI takes on the role of land developer, general contractor, and a full-service mortgage company.
